Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians, welcome to First Grade! My name is Sandra Mijares. I am a Venezuelan economist who started working as a bank loan officer in 1990 until 1993. In 1996, I worked as general manager for a chemical company until 2011. While I was working in the chemical company, I taught economics theory in a private university in Venezuela, and also evaluated theses from accounting students.
In 2012, I started a master’s degree in education with a specialization in mathematics at Nova Southeastern University and successfully finished in 2013. I changed my major from economics to education, but behind this change was my experience as a mother of a son with ADHD and how I helped him to overcome it. During my son’s childhood, I had to study mathematics to explain him in a straightforward manner all concepts involved. Therefore, I decided that I could use this experience to help children understand math better. In 2014, I worked as a kindergarten and middle school math teacher. Among my students were some special need kids and I was able to help most of the students achieve an improvement around 50% in the subject. I also worked in the community as a math tutor for special need children.
In June 2015, I got hired by The Golden Rule School to teach First Grade Bilingual at Illinois Campus. The school year 2017-2018 is my fourth year at Golden Rule Charter Schools.
During this school year, your children will learn to read, write and dictate stories, reading strategies based on metacognition; basic mathematics operations, and much more. Our goal at the end of first grade, it is that every student will read fluently at least 60 words per minute (wpm). The students must read at least 20 minutes daily to achieve this goal.
I appreciate diversity and know that every child is a winner. Come to join us on the incredible journey of learning!
Please feel free to contact me by email anytime. I am also available for a conference when scheduled one or two days in advance.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Mijares
